Are you afraid of the dark? Most of us as children were. But then we grew up and realized that there is nothing to be afraid of. So how is this proven to us as children? Usually we, or someone else, turns on a light! And then what do we see? We see there was nothing there to be afraid of. Too many good people live in darkness and cower from its despotism. Like we’ve seen in the media over the past week. But darkness can have no power over light, even the most faint. In today’s dark politically correct society the darkness is so prevalent that most tremble in fear of going against it or even surrender to it, and then go as far as defending it.
Darkness can be very irritating. For example, this week I noticed something in my eye that was a dark speck. When I tried to focus I couldn’t help but see this little dark spec. I went to the eye doctor and he says it’s a floater. A myodesopsia or a shadow that’s cast on the retina. Very irritating but permanent. He said it becomes more obvious in the light, the brighter the light the more obvious the dark spec in my eye will be.
Now this is a very good physical illustration of a spiritual truth in America these days. When the light is broadcast through American Christians’ outspoken opinions, the darkness is exposed. A case in point is the recent Chick-Fil-A furor. All the Christian CEO of this company did was make a public statement that he believed in traditional marriage. This action, (like a brightly lit room would cause my floater to be more apparent), exposed the darkness in our society as it was manifested over the top in the media that supports it.
Ephesians 5: 8-14 is a good illustration of this fact.
God’s light produces every kind of goodness, right living, and truth. 10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord. 11 Have no part in the things that people in darkness do, which produce nothing good. Instead, tell everyone how wrong those things are. 12 Actually, it is shameful to even talk about the things those people do in secret. 13 But the light makes clear how wrong those things are. 14 Yes, everything is made clear by the light.
Verse 14 continues with a statement that I’ve taken some liberty with:
“Wake up America you who are sleeping! Rise from spiritual darkness, and Christ will shine on you.”
In the past, before I became a Christian American, I was full of darkness, but now I am full of light in the Lord Jesus Christ. So, in verse eleven above, A Christian American’s Opinion will have no part in the things that people in darkness do, which produce nothing good. Instead, we tell everyone how wrong those things are. (Ephesians 5:11 paraphrased)
So simply turn on the light and expose the darkness for what they are and Jesus Christ will shine on you.
This is our hope for America. Cower not from floaters.
